Designer Interview with Laura Parra
1. Who are you, where do you come from?
I’m Laura Parra, a jeweller with a background in fine art and restoration. I’m originally from Barcelona, a vibrant city that’s full of creativity and life, which has definitely influenced my work. I’ve since set up my workshop in the tranquil Bedfordshire countryside, where I create jewellery that celebrates nature and individuality.
2. Tell me about yourself and your creations.
My jewellery is inspired by nature and the flowing, organic forms you find in the world around us. I love to create one-of-a-kind pieces that are sustainable and ethically sourced. A lot of my work is also influenced by the architecture of Antoni Gaudí, especially his use of natural forms and colours. There’s a playfulness in his designs that naturally finds its way into my work. Growing up in Barcelona, surrounded by his art, it became part of my creative language without me even realising it. I also offer bespoke services, where I work closely with clients to bring their dream jewellery to life – a very collaborative and creative process!
3. How did you start, and why did you choose your craft?
I’ve always loved working with my hands and paying attention to the finer details. After falling in love with a British gentleman, I moved to the UK, and with a bit of savings and time, I decided to pursue something that had always attracted me but I never had the chance to study or practise. I enrolled in courses in Hatton Garden to train as a goldsmith, and that’s where my jewellery journey truly began.
Jewellery felt like the perfect way to combine my passion for creativity and precision. Plus, I get to play with beautiful materials and tell stories through my designs. Making pieces that people treasure and pass down feels like such a rewarding and personal craft. And honestly, growing up in Barcelona, with Gaudí’s incredible architecture all around me, it’s hard not to be inspired by that level of artistry.
4. What is your favourite piece and why?
It’s difficult to choose a favourite, as my pieces are a bit like my children – each one holds a special place in my heart. But if I had to pick, I’d say the “Under the Sea” collection, particularly the bangle and one of the rings. The collection was inspired by the Mediterranean Sea, with its flowing shapes and tiny fish swimming through the designs, capturing the movement and vibrancy of the ocean. There’s also a touch of Gaudí influence in these pieces, with their organic forms and playful nature. For me, they represent both my love for the sea and my Barcelona roots, blending nature and artistry in a way that feels personal and close to home.
5. Do you have favourite materials you like working with?
I love working with precious stones like sapphires, topaz, and emeralds for their rich colours and timeless beauty. I’m also a big fan of using enamel, particularly plique-à-jour, to create pieces that almost glow with vibrant colours. There’s something really special about playing with texture and light, making the jewellery feel as alive as the natural world it’s inspired by.
6. Any advice for others looking to establish their brand?
Be true to your creative vision and let your personality shine through in your work. People love connecting with something authentic. Don’t be afraid to experiment and find your unique style. Also, communication is everything – especially with bespoke pieces. Work closely with your clients to understand their vision and make it a reality. It’s a collaborative process, and when done right, it creates something truly special.
7. What does creativity mean to you?
Creativity is about seeing the world through fresh eyes and finding beauty in unexpected places. It’s taking inspiration from nature, like Gaudí did, and transforming it into something tangible and meaningful. For me, it’s about freedom, experimentation, and bringing joy and wonder into everyday life through art
