Pearls, "Teardrops of the Moon"

Pearls have long been cherished for their natural beauty and elegance, making them a timeless classic in the world of jewellery.  Their lustrous appearance and magical aura have captivated the hearts of people for centuries, making them one of the most sought after gems in the world.

Known as the Teardrops of the Moon, pearls are unique gemstones that are formed inside the shells of oysters and other mollusks.  They are created when an irritant, such as a grain of sand or a parasite, becomes trapped inside the shell. In response, the mollusk secretes nacre, a combination of calcium carbonate and conchiolin, to coat the irritant and protect itself. Over time, numerous layers of nacre form around the irritant, eventually creating a beautiful pearl.

Pearls come in a variety of colours and shapes and sizes, ranging from classic white and cream hues to more exotic shades of black, pink and golden. They can be round, oval button shaped, drop shaped, or baroque, each with its own unique charm and beauty.

Historically deep sea divers would risk their lives to hunt for pearls, but now cultured pearls, which are grown with human intervention, are the most common type of pearls available in the market today.

In the world of jewellery, pearls are often associated with sophistication, elegance and femininity.  In the 16th Century they were a firm favourite of Queen Elizabeth 1 whose contemporary portraits display her with multiple strands of pearls, she even procured the famous strands of black pearls owned by Mary Queen of Scots which can also be seen in many of her famous portraits.

Pearls were so rare and sought after that they created imitation pearls by blowing tiny glass bubbles and filling them with wax. They symbolise purity, wisdom and wealth. Pearls were thought to aid with digestive disorders and help with heart and eye ailments, improving the skin, helping with fertility and with ease in childbirth!

Pearls are versatile gemstones that can be incorporated into a wide range of jewellery designs, from classic pearls strands and earrings to modern pearl pendants and statement rings.  They can be paired with other gemstones, such as diamonds, sapphires, or emeralds to create stunning unique pieces that reflect the wearer's personal style. Pearls are a popular choice for bridal jewellery adding elegance and grace to a bride's ensemble.

Whether it's a formal event, a casual outing or a romantic dinner, pearls have the power to elevate any outfit and add a touch of sophistication and glamour to any look. Pearls are more than just gemstones, they are treasures from the sea that have captured the hearts of people around the world with their natural beauty and timeless charm.
