As the leaves begin to change colour and the air turns crisp, October brings with it not only the excitement of autumn but also the celebration of one the most captivating gemstones, Tourmaline. Esteemed for its dazzling array of colours and unique properties, tourmaline is the birthstone for those born in October, making it a perfect gem to highlight, as we embrace the season.

One of the most remarkable features of tourmaline is its incredible spectrum of colours. From deep green and rich pinks, to vibrant blues and striking yellows, tourmaline can be found in almost every shade imaginable.

Indeed Catherine Marche, one of our designers in Jedeco, has said of it: "I love the rainbow of colours that tourmaline exhibit. It is a fascinating gem, especially the bicolour, watermelon and neon blue Paraiba which are so unique and special."

This colour diversity is due to the gem's complex chemical composition, which can include elements such as iron, magnesium, aluminium, chrome and lithium.

Tourmaline has a rich history that spans centuries and cultures. The name "tourmaline" originates from the Sinhalese word "turmali" which means 'mixed gemstones'. In ancient Egypt, toumalin was believed to be a stone of protection, thought to guard against negative energies and promote healing. The Egyptians cherished tourmaline for its vibrant colours, which they associated with the rainbow and the goddess of love, beauty and fertility. Native American tribes also valued toumaline for its purported healing properties and used it in their rituals.

In addition to its beauty, tourmaline is imbued with significant meaning. It is often associated with balance, healing and protection. Many believe that tourmaline helps to ground energy, dispel negativity and promote emotional stability. The gemstone is said to strengthen the body's immune system and assist in overcoming fears and anxieties, making it a popular choice for those seeking emotional clarity and resilience.

Tourmaline is mined in various countries of the world including Brazil, United States, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Pakistan, Madagascar and Sri Lanka. These locations are renowned for their unique deposits and the toumaline mined from these areas can vary significantly in colour and quality.

Tourmaline is relatively durable, with a hardness rating of 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, making it suitable for everyday wear. However, like all gemstones it requires proper care to maintain its beauty. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasives that could damage the gemstone.

As we celebrate October, let us embrace the beauty and significance of Tourmaline. Whether you are drawn to its vibrant colours, its historical importance or its symbolic meanings, tourmaline is a gemstone that resonates with many. So, this October, let tourmaline illuminate your life with its incredible charm and energy.
